Important Factors That Affect Search Engine Optimization

On page optimization is the part of search engine optimization that deals with all the factors on your webpage that affect your website ranking in search engines. There are multiple things that come under the domain of on page optimization. Some of these on page optimization factors include your webpage title, website URL, the Meta description tags, attributes of images and the content.

Keyword selection

Choosing the correct keyword is the first step of search engine optimization. Your keyword should be low in competition and preferably long-tailed. Here’s a hint for choosing the keyword, imagine yourself as a customer surfing the web for a specific product, then think of a word that you would prefer to search on Google’s search engine. After that, research on that keyword’s strength and competition. Ideal keyword selection will make your on page optimization more fruitful and convenient.

Page Title

On page optimization starts from optimizing your page title. Your title must contain the keyword. Moreover, it is better to start your title with the keyword. For example, if you are offering a “Webdesign Service” you should start your page title as “Webdesign Service that……”

Optimizing the URL

Similar to title your URL must also have the keyword. If you are searching for webdesign firms, the first option that a search engine will look for will be site URLs with the keywords in it. So, you must optimize your URL according to the rules of on page optimization to get the best out of it. Nobody would like his or her URL to appear like p0=34rjjr5. Optimize it.

Optimizing the Meta-Description

Meta description deals with the code of the page. Most of the search engines use the Meta description tags to describe their results. On page optimization rules say that your Meta description tag should contains the keyword. This way there are more chances that you page will rank higher in search engines.

Alt Attributes

Placing Alt attributes for pictures and other content on the website should not be missed while doing on page optimization. This will not only help in ranking your page higher in webpage searches but your page ranking in image searches will also be good.

These are some of the main attributes that must be considered while doing search engine optimization on your page. Keep in mind that bringing the customers to your page does not necessarily mean that you will earn a lot. There are also some other factors as well that you need to consider when it comes to on page optimization.

3 Steps Before You Start Your Webdesign

There are 3 fundamental factors to consider before designing your website.

Step 1 Forget the look (but just for now)

The internet contains many exciting effects so when you start thinking about your website it’s easy for your mind to wander off into a world of visual animations and flashy widgets. However, before you are seduced by graphical gimmicks take a step back! At this initial stage it is critical that you remain focused on what you need your website to help your business achieve, and nothing more.

Step 2 Identify your objectives

The purpose of your website is to fulfill your specific business objectives so refer to the essence of your business plan. Whether you are driving revenue directly through online sales, or using your site to build brand awareness … your website should be designed to deliver all of these objectives simultaneously. Clearly identify what your objectives are and communicate these needs to your designer.

Step 3 Know your customers

By now you know who your primary customers are and have also identified any other potential markets. Knowing your target market is core to the success of your website. Your audience should dictate the look and feel of the website, not just your personal preferences.

In conclusion using these three very simple steps can dramatically alter the way the end result. Fundamentally you website should effectively drive your business. In addition to this it´s important to regularly evaluate your website against your objectives as these will continually change as your business grows.

What a Professional Web Designer Should do for You

Once upon a time, a business could choose not to have a web site. They reasoned that they did not need a professional web site; they could do just fine without one. Then, one of their competitors decided to get a web site and a buzz was created. Not to be outdone, another competitor decided to follow suite. Then another and then another. Pretty soon customers were asking the business if they had a web site. Finally, they realized that they needed a website in order to keep up with their competitors. And so, the Internet exploded. These days, everyone has a web site. From large corporations to small businesses; families to individuals, everyone is on the Web. A friend of mine even created one for his infant child.

This article is created to speak to the few remaining businesses that have yet to tackle the Internet beast. You want to have a web presence, but it seems a daunting task. “Where do I start?” you say. “What issues will I need to address so that I make the most of my new web site?” you continue. This brief article will cover some of the areas of the webdesign process to pay particular attention to. We have designed many web sites for clients that had no idea where to start. We firmly believe that client education is a vital part of the overall success of the web project. Most professional web design companies have published some guidelines that will help potential clients answer some of their questions. It is with that in mind that we have written this article.

Why do you want a web site?

Will your web site be for personal use (just show some photographs to your family members, for example)? Will it be to advertise a business service? Will it be an informational web site, simply to pass on knowledge to the visitor? Will it be used to sell a product? Is it important that you show up #1 in Search Engines?

These are vital questions with which to begin. The answers you come up with will determine the direction in which the overall design should go.

Do you have a business logo?

If you have been in business, you may already have a logo or a trademark that your customers recognize. If that is the case, do you have the original graphic that can be emailed? It will be important to use that on your web site.

If you do not have a logo or anything by which your customers currently know you, do you have any ideas about what you might like, a sketch, a doodle or something similar? Whatever the case, usually a professional web design company can design a professional logo for you or reuse your current one.

Do you have particular colors that you want to use?

Not all colors work well on the Internet. Generally, selecting a few colors is the best path to take. Your web designer can help you select quality colors that will come together in a design that you will be proud to show off.

Have you seen web sites that you like?

Providing an example (or examples) of a site that you like is a good way to help your web designer understand the look you are after. A professional webdesign company will usually get this type of feedback from their clients. Then they will have a feel for their “taste” and can use that as a pattern for their site.

Do you have a web site domain name?

This is the actual address of the web site. It is what you will rattle off when someone asks you, “Do you have a web site?” If you do not have one registered already, your web designer can take care of that for you. Some web design companies may charge a yearly fee for this service, anywhere from $10 to $50. However, some web design companies offer this service at no charge. Make sure to ask your web design company about this upfront so that there is no confusion.

Do you know how many web pages you want for your site?

Almost all web sites have a Home page, a Contact Us page and a Links page. However, after that, you have to determine what you want features to emphasize about your business. Is it important that visitors know some history about your company? If so, you will need an “About Us” page. Do you have categories of product that you want to feature on your web site? If so, each category will have its own page. Do you want visitors to be able to fill out an order form when they are ready to buy something? If that is the case, you will need an “Order Form” page.

Your web designer will ask you about this facet of your web site, but it is good to think about this on your own before you take that step. As a rule, the more pages a web site has, the higher the cost. So choose a web design company that you are comfortable with and don’t let them talk you into more pages than you really need.

Do you have graphics and photographs to use on your site?

If you have pictures to use on your site, are they in a high-quality digital format? As a rule, a scanned photograph will not look good on your website. The best pictures are ones taken with a digital camera. These can be used on the web site and formatted so that they have a professional look.

Many web design companies are able to take pictures for you. Usually, this service is an additional charge, so make sure you discuss this option.

Will you maintain the web site yourself?

If so, do you have an understanding of the Code Languages used to create your web site. Some of these languages may include:

  • PHP
  • HTML
  • XML
  • SWF

If you are comfortable with these languages, your web design company can probably setup the web site to allow you to maintain it yourself. However, most companies will not support sites in which the client has made changes to the original code. Make sure to discuss this during your initial consultation.

Some companies will create Content Management Systems (CMS). These allow their clients to update the website without having to touch the original code. With a custom CMS, if you can create a document in a Word Processing program, you can change your website content. This means you do not have to learn any programming languages and, at the same time, you do not have to call your web design company every time you want to update your site. Of course, the company you choose should always be available to assist if you get stuck. They should also be willing to e-mail you a link to show a demonstration of their custom CMS.

Hopefully, this article has given you some good guidance to follow on the path to your new web site. With some advanced preparation, you will tackle the Internet beast with no problem. The web design company you choose should be willing to supply you with a list of satisfied clients. Take the time to review the list. Contact the clients listed and ask them for their opinions of the company. This will give you some good information to help you make a good decision.

We must not forget to hire those that offer a cheap web design price but provides quality service.

When the Webmaster Dies: Businesses Brought to Their Knees

Losing your webmaster could be a serious problem that can bring your business to its knees. It could make your business vulnerable to a hostage situation or a web site pull-down. You could lose access to your own site, with little hope of retrieving it. Hard-won search engine visibility could be lost. In most cases, a very long legal process with a lot of red tape is required to prove your right to access web site information. You may be forced to watch as your investment slips through your fingers and vanishes.

Total disaster can be averted. Even if you have someone else who is in charge of managing your web site, you should prepare, well in advance, with a contingency plan. Record and store safely, the following:

1. The name of the domain name registrar, and the account name and/or number and password that would allow you to make changes to that domain. Such critical changes might include:

a. pointing it at a different hosting server
b. transferring it to another registrar
c. controlling email handling
d. renewing your registration before it expires. If it does, the name returns to “available” status and could be swiftly purchased by a rival company, simply to keep you from using it.

NOTE: Be absolutely sure that your webmaster is only a TECHNICAL or BILLING contact on your account, and that all ADMIN & REGISTRANT contacts shown are in YOUR name, your business name/address, and your telephone and email address. Once you confirm this, change the password on the account. Record it on your end and make it accessible to a trusted associate in the event you are unable to service your business (death, travel, etc.) This way all access for changes will HAVE to go through you to make a change. Don’t put yourself in a position where someone can unintentionally (or otherwise) lock you out of your own account.

Anyone with your domain name registrar access id/pw can control your site. There is no ethical reason for a webmaster to insist that domain registration be under sole webmaster control. Typically, it’s just for convenience and to minimize potential for unintentional changes made by well-meaning owners.

Do not presume that your web designer set up your domain registration in YOUR name. Many webmasters are actually the LEGAL OWNERS of a domain you thought was in your legal control. Here is how to view your registration: Visit a registrar such as NetworkSolutions.com or GoDaddy.com and search the “WHOIS” information for your domain name.

2. The name of your hosting provider. Ideally, that would include obtaining from your hosting provider a list of backup contacts on their side, in case your webmaster is not available or unresponsive.

3. Management Console: Accounts and passwords to your host server’s management console (if you have one). Not all sites have this, but ultimately, a management console is an online portal that web hosting providers offer clients which allow individuals to control the configuration of their part of the server.

4. Server Access: If you have a dedicated server: know the root or administrator account name and password.

5. Publishing: Know account names and passwords to the appropriate login and ftp accounts used to manage the server, or to upload/publish content to it. Also ask if there is an account authorization call-in PIN for further identification for incoming calls requesting changes to the account.

6. Third Party Add-ons: Know Account names and passwords to any applications. For example the administration accounts used for blogs, statistics, click campaigns, photo galleries or video streams, shopping carts, payment buttons, traffic counters, forums or other tools that have been installed on your site or server.

7. Webmaster Alternate Contact. In many cases your webmaster may have a trusted individual who, while not involved in your site, may be available to grant access or assist in an emergency. However, YOU should be the alternate, first and foremost.

8. Security: Historically, you’ve been relying on your webmaster to keep this same information safe already, but you’ll absolutely have to do the same. It doesn’t matter how you do it – perhaps written on a note you keep in a safe, or something else entirely – you do want to keep this sensitive information secure. But no matter how, it’s critical that more than one person have it!

Even if the information you gather is meaningless or confusing to you, that doesn’t matter. If you are not familiar with website maintenance and technical babble, you’ll soon be looking for someone who is. Once you find this person, they will absolutely NEED this information in order to help you. If your webmaster has always paid for hosting servers directly, then you are relying on his account to remain in good standing in order for your site to continue to be visible. Therefore, I recommend you pull copies of your web site files and relocate to a host service paid for directly by you. Otherwise, a bill unpaid by the webmaster will cause your site to drop out of site, and possibly lose hard-won ranking & visibility within search results.

Use this article above as a checklist. Print it, complete all missing information, then file this document securely with at least one other person who knows how to get to it if you are not available. Avert future disaster and prepare now.

Website Design Vs Website Development

The terms “web design” and “web development” are commonly used in media and advertisements. There is a lot of similarity and integration between the two words; however, they are completely different and have entirely diverse meanings.

Web design

It is the customer-facing part of a website, meaning the design is the first thing that internet users see upon arrival at any website. Since it is the 21st century, people expect a development in the way that websites look; in teenage language, “cool”. A webdesigner’s job is not easy. It is stressful and puts a lot of pressure on them because of people’s expectations. They are also concerned with how his/her website should look like and what the feedback of customers will be when his/her site is released.

A good webdesigner must be familiar with the principles of design and how to put them together to create a site that looks good. He/she must also know and understand the usability of a website and how to test it.

The Principles of Design

The basic principles of design apply, and are crucial, not only to website designing, but to any other type of design. Abiding by these principles will help webdesigners create and produce more pleasing designs.

1. Balance – is the distribution of light and heavy elements on a page. Larger and darker elements appear heavier than smaller, lighter elements. Balance will show you how to lay out your pages properly so that your website will work efficiently.

2. Contrast – when people think of contrast, they always think of color. However, there is more to contrast than just color. Contrast can be applied to shapes (square vs. circle), sizes (big vs. small) and even textures (rough vs. smooth).

3. Emphasis – This is what is eye-catching in a design. Webdesigners or artists have been tempted to emphasize everything; however, it just makes the design bland. Instead, a designer should determine the hierarchy of a page. Then based on that hierarchy, apply the emphasis to the elements.

4. Rhythm – can also be called repetition. Rhythm brings internal stability to one’s webdesigns. Repetition provides patterns for your site, and since patterns are easy for people to comprehend, they will easily understand your website.

5. Unity – is the principle of keeping similar elements together and keeping different elements distant from each other.

Webdesigners also need to be an expert with various graphic design tools, for instance, Adobe Photoshop. Most would also use HTML as a tool to their designs. Site owners would provide the content and space for a site, but it is the web designer’s job to provide the layout for the desired content.

Web Development

Web development, on the other hand is the back-end of a website, or in other words “behind the scenes”. It involves the programming and interactions on websites. A web developer focuses on how a site works and what internet users do on their site. They can also conduct usability tests like webdesigners do, but only for the functionality they create. Good developers must be familiar with CGI, because they will need to program it. They must also be well aware of scripts like PHP and also HTML. Developers must know how web forms work and how to keep a website successful.

Despite being completely different from each other, webdesigners and developers need to work together in order to follow the owner’s wishes and produce a great and effective website.
